A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson Buy at: Amazon

Oddly unsatisfying, yet still worth reading.

I used to chew through stuff like this when I was a kid. Loved it, and this book I'm sure I'd have found it hard to put down. Yet I found it missing something, perhaps dumbed down, but I'd still say read it for the stories: the personal histories and rivalries, more than anything else.
